App Store Grift
If you want to sign up to my Patreon – and why wouldn’t you, crammed as it is with hot content, please make sure you sign up via the website, as new signups via the Apple app store Patreon app are now subject to a 1/3 surcharge, payable to Apple.
Nothing changes for existing subscribers. But if you perhaps take a break, then re-sign up, do it on the website, not the app.
THAT IS ALL.
THAT IS NOT ALL:
Thank you to everyone who supports me via the Patreon. Were it not for this support during a few pretty awful years, the webcomics would not have continued.
Hasn’t Steve Jobs got enough money?
The Western Union fees to Hell are a nightmare.
See also Hank Green’s video about just not signing up for *anything* in-app (for this same reason) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3D_4IpKTN8
Patreon should abandon their iOS app completely and focus on making their website friendly on mobile browsers. It’s not like they’re a delivery app that really benefits from native API access to maps and such. Why should they pay 30% to Apple when the native app doesn’t really add value? As a bonus they can stop relentlessly nagging me about using their app, and also I can enjoy the privacy benefits of not running their code on my phone.
I completely agree!
