Derek making use here of the classic hotel notepad with six sheets of paper left on it, the one you have to shade over with a soft pencil to see what was written on the previous page to locate clues (I am speaking from personal experience).

Derek’s “carpal tunnel so bad he couldn’t stab a rice pudding” alibi looks very flimsy now…
Well, he probably wrote the note slowly. No stabbing.
That’s the handwriting of someone whose thumbs aren’t on speaking terms with their fingers.
It looks like he’s using an extra thick pen. Speaking from experience (not carpal tunnel, but similar nerve issues), extra thick pens/pencils greatly improve both legibility and duration one can write. Also, if his wrist brace is a traditional cock-up splint, that also helps with how long you can write. If anything, I’m more impressed by his ability to write without poking holes in the paper.
Derek was serious about thinking Charlotte was able to find the killer? He’s a great mind.
I really love(d) that Derek is probably the only adult to take her seriously. Maybe he might not have meant the “super sleuth” remark genuinely at first, but when he saw everything she had worked out, he got right down into it with her without being patronizing.
Indeed, which could also be interpreted that he recognized Lottie as the only genuine threat and knew best to work with her and maybe throw her off his trail.
Stealing his own note before she can read it is taking throwing her off his scent a little bit far, though

There’s a YouTuber I watch who does reviews of “Murder, She Wrote” episodes, usually weird, funny, or bad ones.
One of her recurring lines is: “Well … this guy’s dead.”
“He’s been murdered… to death!”
