After all these years of knowing each other, Lottie is still able to leave Claire speechless. Glenn is speechless too, good no one started laughing. Bernice is ready to break everyone’s hearts without any mercy.
I can only hope his blog restarts English translations again soon (and the current web design implies that it’s coming), I’ve been missing his stuff for years.
What a fabulous character this Bernice is! Obviously she’s met Lottie already, but not Claire or Gumbo. So did they already know each other around the time of the Miyamoto events, or did Bernice meet Lottie more recently?
I’m a lifelong Texan, and for some reason, my brain refuses to “hear” the voices of the cast with British accents. I have no idea why.
But here we have Lottie putting on a Louisiana accent, which I know fairly well (what with them being neighbors and all), and my brain is trying to come up with the sound of a British person faking a Louisiana accent and is just going OMGWTF.
Think of Dick Van Dyke doing a cockney doing a Southern* accent
*There’s only one Southern accent …in the same way the only British accents are cockney or the Queen, and New Zealand and Australian accents are one and the same, etc.
I know you’re joking (about there being one Southern accent) but I still feel compelled to say that not only are there many different Southern accents in the US, but some of the accents are so different from each other that people who speak the one can’t understand a single word that someone who speaks the other is saying. (e.g. someone from a major southern city like Atlanta talking to someone from deep in Appalachia.)
There was a US tv show based in New Orleans that starred an actor from there whose accent was so strong the show had subtitles
It wasn’t on air very long
There seem to be a few Kiwi actors doing ok in US tv shows with decent generic US accents, but now also the character Victoria (Grace Palmer) in Animal Control who was allowed to play a Kiwi – so strange hearing a Kiwi accent in a US show but also very nice
There’s a reason UK & GB actors are cast to play Americans/Canadians more often than the reverse: they are much better at doing the various N. American (barring Mexico) accents than the Yanks are at theirs.
Nah, they’re not better at it – the US viewers are just used to accents being butchered. Most “southern” accents on US TV are so badly performed it’s painful. And we also are used to people from other parts of the US sounding bizarre (looking at you, Boston). So our tolerance is greater.
Agreed. My theory (as a speaker of American English) is that English people are more likely to notice this because they feel a direct sense of ownership of the English language that Americans do not. An American thinks “That’s a bad American accent”. An English person thinks “That’s bad English”.
“How could I not?” aw glenn
Look at Claire’s surprisingly manicured nail in panel 5!
Nothing says “HEY EVERYBODY LOOK AT ME I’M IN DISGUISE!” like a trenchcoat, dark glasses and a wig.
I’m the master of disguise! No one will ever suspect!
Hah, you can’t fool us. That’s OBVIOUSLY Desmond in disguise.
Beware women who can grab onto comics panels
Gutter grippers!
A very strong, powerful woman this Bernice.
After all these years of knowing each other, Lottie is still able to leave Claire speechless. Glenn is speechless too, good no one started laughing. Bernice is ready to break everyone’s hearts without any mercy.
Her name is Creme Brulee?
Sweet.
I suppose her name is a homage to Gilles Roussel, aka Boulet, the best-known French web comic artist.
Bea Wolf was great.
Bernice is obviously a completely new character, and not at all someone Claire, Glenn and the rest of us are intimately familiar with.
!!!!!!!!
I like her a lottie, too
BB needs sonic back-up-(At least a drummer) Boom-boomba-boom-boom, Bom-Tish!
I see Benoit Blanc has a little sister/niece/junior distaff relative.
Yes, with Bernice’s name & accent that’s the first detective I thought of.
So the Lottiegänger becomes Lottie, so Lottie becomes someone else?
That’s a whole Lottie identities!
I can’t tell if my confidence in Lottie’s mental aptitude for this case has increased or if it’s just flown out the window.
She will make the left and right frames crooked. Hope you reinforced them.
My eyes are not good. Does her button say “TOO MUCH”?
Yup. Funny to cnow that Lottie has such a pin.
A Knives Kept Safely In The Drawer Mystery
She has always depended upon the kindness of strange.
Bad Machinery always depended on the strangeness of kinder.
Schönes Wortspiel!
Boulet is the name of a famous French cartoonist. So this comic is getting intertextual!
I can only hope his blog restarts English translations again soon (and the current web design implies that it’s coming), I’ve been missing his stuff for years.
He posts a lot of comics with English subtitles of sorts on instagram, I too would prefer to read his stuff on his site, but that’s how it is
English (of sorts) subtitles (of sorts). But that’s part of the charm!
I’m not fooled. You can’t hide those hips with a mere Mackintosh.
Wow it looks like they found the Lottie doppleganger already! Case closed. Unless she has come to recruit Claire and G**m to the dark side.
Sure it isn’t Blanche Dubois?
Disappointed.
A Solver page without Lottie just doesn’t hit the same. Please bbring her back, John.
No no, fair play, I hear you. Hopefully she’ll return in the new year. But give Bernice a chance.
Isn’t that a Beatles song?
DAMMIT! Just thought of a much better line but I can’t delete the first one! Here’s what I should have said:
That’s all we are saying.
I wish I could give you a double-thumbs-up here!
I imagine Bernice with the worst combination of a blanch deveraux impression with a Susanne sugarbaker impression.
Ha, you can’t fool me. That is clearly Brenda Lee Johnson of the LAPD, gone undercover.
What a fabulous character this Bernice is! Obviously she’s met Lottie already, but not Claire or Gumbo. So did they already know each other around the time of the Miyamoto events, or did Bernice meet Lottie more recently?

And an Australian accent is the one that American actors use, that falls somewhere between Cockney and South African.

You forgot the BBQ.
The most famous Southrn belle of all, Scarlett O’Hara in Gone With the Wind, was played by Vivien Leigh — a Brit.
I just need to know: did Lottie get to keep her coffee shop gig?
Yes, her job is safe.
Huzzah! Appreciate the answer.
A.I. could never draw hands like this
Do I sense a bit of “Knives Out” in this intro?
Does her button say ” Too much”?
