I know you’re joking (about there being one Southern accent) but I still feel compelled to say that not only are there many different Southern accents in the US, but some of the accents are so different from each other that people who speak the one can’t understand a single word that someone who speaks the other is saying. (e.g. someone from a major southern city like Atlanta talking to someone from deep in Appalachia.)
