Morty Starshine 21/4
Many apologies to Robert J. Campbell M.D. for the misrepresentation of his dictionary in today’s page. I do not believe it actually features pictures of horror authors and clowns. Do not buy it if this is what you are hoping to find.
YASS! Lottie successfully cured Mildred’s phobia! Another big achievement for her♡! And what an amazing library… I miss go to the library…
I don’t know how I’ve survived without my library. I’ve already been through the withdrawal, the pain, the itching, the watery eyes. If I go back, will the homeless people funk still give me the same thrill?
I don’t think I can stand going through withdrawal twice.
(Our main library is amazing. 5 floors, with a reading room on the top floor with a stunning view of Portland, a balcony, and a fireplace.)

I must say, Vancouver WA has a very fine looking library. I had no idea (I’m from Denver, but a frequent visitor to the Pacific Northwest as Imused to live in Eugene OR and have quite a few friend in the PDX.
I actually really enjoy it, although I mostly use it as a place to go and write. Some of the satellite libraries in the same system are equally stunning, but all are very different.
I don’t think they’re in a library. They’re in a big chain bookshop sticking it to the man by reading the books without buying the books.
That would explain the books displayed and the lack of labels on the spine of the books.
Please don’t make me start drawing the spines onto books, the next story has pages and pages set in a bookshop, every day a thousand books ????
Omg does it take place in THIS bookshop? 13/4 looks an awful lot like the start date for next story…
15/4, I think, but point well taken.
Don’t worry. We are fans, not a bunch of sadistic people. Maybe…
I think you’re right, those stairs and signs seem very reminiscent of Powell’s in Portland OR
That’s exactly what I was thinking, except with about 88% less people. Last time I was there you couldn’t even walk through the place because of all the people. The queue to the check-out wound down the hall, up the steps, and into the coffee shop.
A book about squirrels by J. Mascis? I would expect him to write about birds, which, after all, are junior dinosaurs.
I applaud that comment.
Au contraire, mon frere! https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1278527/?ref_=tt_ch Mascis in ‘Squirrels!’
Too late! Uh… anyone want to buy an almost unused psychiatric dictionary?
Oh, and… Shelley!!! Yay!!!
Yes! I caught Shelley too! Glad she’s still on the book circuit. John’s really outdone himself in background Easter eggs this run.
I have no idea what that sign with Shelley on it signifies. @BLUNDERS? What are those numbers?
Someone please enlighten me!
Those are dates
Damn those Brits, writing their dates backward!
By Brits I assume you mean “every other country in the world” but I won’t judge.
Yeah, I was going to comment on the date style, but then I realized the “every other country in the world” part, and the “it actually makes more sense” part, and decided to keep my mouth shut.
I left out the ;). My bad.
I think a 😉 should be considered implied on about half the comments here.
If you want to get technical (i.e., I’m probably going to be annoying here), there are other places besides the States that use a MD format (albeit it’s usually a YMD, not a MDY, although without the year, they look the same). MD is common in East Asian countries, for example (China, Japan, North and South Korea, Taiwan, Mongolia).
But, of course, if we didn’t do weird crap to be different from most of the rest of the world, we wouldn’t be ‘MURICA.
The American Big Endian party and the American Little Endian party were evenly split during the original congressional hearings on date formats. So they came up with a style that everyone would be equally unhappy with, which allowed it to pass unanimously. Or was that the nations of the world with the decision to abbreviate Coordinated Universal Time as UTC? One of those two might be true.
YYYY-MM-DD is the only sensical date format. It sorts correctly in an alphanumeric sort.
I presume “Blunders” is the name of the bookshop they’re in. Shades of “Borders” (now-defunct chain on both sides of the Atlantic) and maybe “Blackwell’s” (still-going UK chain mostly serving university campuses).
Yeah, once I realized the numbers were dates, it all fell into place.
I’ll be honest, I thought they were odds for betting. e.g. some kind of bookshop boxing tournament, Shelley being the favourite. Tour dates never even occurred to me.
My money was on Starshine all the way.
I’d love to see more comics on Shelley’s book tours. We did get the one where she went to Arizona and saved a town from giant mutant moths.
The wait will not be long (one month)
One mo(n)th.
Uh oh!!!!
Now that I know it’s only a month it’s far too long to wait.
Which is the second number in the dates, mind you
Maybe next time she could save Los Angeles from giant mutant ants! Could give the story a similar title… Now what could it be… Maybe plural this time… 😉
I’ll take Shelley over James Arness any day.
I’d love to see Shelley driving up the Pacific Highway to Malibu in that storyline.
Down the M5 and A30 to Tredregyn seems likely.
Alternatively it could be Erin in her Mordawwa persona, to sort out Magus Tom.
I’ll be deeply disappointed if anyone who isn’t one of the other five main Steeple characters sorts out Magus Tom. They’ve had to put up with him, they should get to sort him out.
I think the pandemic has permanently cured my deipnophobia. MY GOD I WANT TO BE ABLE TO DINE WITH OTHER* PEOPLE AGAIN.
*”other” meaning “other than my immediate household, whom I love dearly but sweet Jesus a year is a long time.
re: Date Formats. We have a standard, use it! ISO 8601 mandates the most logical CCYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS (that is a 24 hour clock by the way). There is no ambiguity, and it sorts properly.
I respect anyone who wheels out an ISO standard on a thread under a comic about killer clowns. If I had three thumbs I’d point them all upwards!!!
Actually, ISO standard 27B/6 mandates no more than two thumbs for an ISO reference on a comic thread about killer clowns. Sorry.
If they pass by the architecture section will they find Shauna? Maybe in the subsection on Brutalism?
I have to wonder if the book entitled “NUTS” prominently displayed next to Mildred is like how fire references coincidentally keep appearing around Claire…
