No, I don’t think so. Mildred is clown-phobic, not coulrophobic. As established last week, coulrophobia is the rational fear of sewer freaks. Okay, maybe Mildew has coulrophobia too, but that seems quite unrelated to the current THUD THUD situation.
Mmmmmmmmaybe. Your mileage may vary, but that stretches the suspension of disbelief too much for me to accept at this point. Lottie’s mystery muscles are back at work, and that was a rather basic mystery.
I think the fact that they are clowns is secondary to the fact that they are violent thugs who have threatened our protagonists with severe bodily harm unless they stop nosing around, and there are rather a lot of them, and they are RIGHT THERE. One snapped twig and things will go very badly. I would be nervous too.
The fact that the harliquinade passes the young ladies by without noticing them led me to understand one of the Great Secrets of Clowndom: The Clown Car Crush!
As anyone who has misheard their Introductory Physics classes knows, atoms are MOSTLY empty space! One of the Basic Clown Disciplines is the concentration to allow the atoms of others squeeze into those empty spaces yet still be able to sort out your atoms from their atoms! Needless to say, this requires Great Mental Preparation to wield such formidable concentration.
Obviously, the clowns are going to go into town via Clown Car, so they are all making the Great Mental Preparation!
I shall expect my Nobel Prize by the next convenient post!
This whole clown precession feels like something out of a British folk-horror movie. Then again I suppose folk-horror is just every other week in the Bobbinsverse.
Didn’t Mildred basically just make up this whole “posters in windows” conspiracy in the first place to jump-start Lottie’s interest in life? No wonder she finds this so disturbing, her vaguely thrown-together conspiracy theory is becoming reality before her very eyes.
Or am I totally misremembering that part? Probably. 😉
John, it’s a tribute to your abilities that I find I long for each new page, to see what happens next, while simultaneously dreading each new page, as it brings this wonderful story closer to its finish.
Mildred really DOES suffer from coulrophobia, doesn’t she…
Either that or she just recognized someone. Possibly an ex-boyfriend or former grade school teacher.

Or… maybe Lottie was… WRONG…?

BUT… Lottie’s mystery-solving process often involves her getting it wrong a few times before she gets it right.
I think we’re jumping to conclusions here. Perhaps her elevated heartbeat is from sudden pangs of romance that have come upon her.

I’m assuming that “THUD” is coming from elsewhere than Mildred.
Nope!
She’s terrorfied!! Only her tenacious grasp on Lottie’s coat prevents her from caterwauling off into the night!
Hm, in panel 2, what’s up with the black armband? “GM?” General manager? Great Mug? Grinning Menace?
This is going to sound bad but I don’t remember at all! I drew this page two months ago. All suggestions are valid.
Grand Master? Gambolling Masquerade?
Generic Maniac.
The word GMail wraps around the full length
Gesmond Mishman?
I think you’ve got it!
Great Mischief
Googly-Moogly. The demi-god Frank Zappa invoked during the song “Don’t Eat Yellow Snow.”
Also invoked by the Kansas City Chefs’ end zone painter.

Mildred has a point. That parade is really creepy. But Lottie’s “evil” smile exactly at the same time is awesome.

Unless you’re in a quarry. Then it’s sci-fi horror.
Harlequinade is a drink made by squeezing clowns.

Heisenberg’s Mystery Principle! Once investigated, the mystery forms and thereafter has always existed.
Anything without an immediate explanation probably involved at least one private meeting and conversation…
So many clowns, so much fun and hilarity … can’t stop laughing!
(Am I reading this wrongly?)
Familiar sense of alarm + coulrophobia (disputed) = THUD THUD THUD
looks like theres a clown lottie near the back of that clownga line
