The newsman’s lament
I’ve been very slack about news posts lately. In my defence: I’ve not been well, twice. But here are some things I’ve done or have coming up.
ITEM! COMFORT BLANKET PODCAST
I have appeared on Joel Morris’ new Comfort Blanket podcast, talking at length about my relationship with Dawson’s Creek and how it has informed my approach – along with with a lot of related TV matters. Joel is a king of UK comedy writing and this chat went deep. It’s a very enjoyable hour in a great series.
ITEM! STEEPLE SUMMER SPECIAL
Max Sarin (GIANT DAYS, HARLEY QUINN + IVY etc – art), Sammy Borras (colours) and I (words) have reunited for a 22-page Steeple summer special which will be available (via my Gumroad and for my $3-and-up Patreon subscribers) on Monday. This one won’t be running on the web. It’s digital-only because posting low-cost things has become very complicated and expensive. All I can tell you right now is that it is a “romance comic” and that you will enjoy it. The cover is below.
I will write more on the nature of this beautiful beast next week!
ITEM! FOR COMPLETISTS & SPANISH SPEAKERS: SOLVER IN PRINT
A niche one here, but I know a few people will be interested: Fandogamia, the Spanish home of Giant Days, printed a translated version of the current Solver story for the Comic Barcelona festival, and you can buy it if you want to. It’s a US-format comic book on nice glossy stock. Will Solver ever come out in print in English? I hope so.
FIRST!!!!!
What is wrong with me
First in comics, first in love.
Tom Pendennis as (a markedly more perverse) Reggie I can see. Archie was always such a simpleton though, and the Reverend has never been that. Maybe love will turn his brain to mush. Can’t wait to read it.
The Rev could use a few soft edges. Maybe a little Shelley experience will be good for him!
Looking forward to this. I know this was posted a while ago on Patreon, but I don’t remember if you answered this there – is the cover art by Max or by you?
By Max!
This gets an absolute promise of pre-purchase from me!
Blending Archie and Steeple? Diabolically brilliant? Brilliantly diabolical? Poor Magus Tom.
I am on the edge of my seat waiting for new Steeple. I haven’t been this excited about an upcoming comic issue since about…1993?
Also, it’s great to see Sammy will be working with you again!
Will there ever be a chance that it would be printed?
Also, I love the classic Archie styled cover. Max is amazingly talented!
I consider the $5 I dropped on that Steeple special money well spent. Kudos to you, Mr. A, for a delightful story, and to Max Sarin, whose artwork feels like the equivalent of giving my eyes a hug. (And don’t think I haven’t noticed that working with Max seems to have prodded you to further step up your own considerable art game in those recent Steeple strips.) Hope you’re feeling better after your brush with the Plague, with no lingering ill effects.
Thanks Nathan! I’ve learned a huge amount working with Max and push myself much harder than I used to as a result.
Seconded, this is one of the finer comics I’ve bought in the last few decades!
Late reply – just wanted to mention that I caught up to this ep of Comfort Blanket in my feed, and it was a really pleasant discussion. You made me care about a show that I totally missed (wrong time in my life) and had a great chat about it. Thanks!
