431 is a joke
A few people have been experiencing 431 errors when trying to view the site. I think this was a problem with cookies that one of this site’s plugins (Comments Like Dislike) was creating. I’ve deleted the plugin and added code to clear its cookies automatically. But that’s why you can’t “thumbs up” comments any more. Comment below if you’re still having issues and I’ll look for what else might be causing the problem.

Hi, John. Thanks for the heads up – even though I could not load the site, I could still read the RSS feed, so I saw this update. Initially after you made the change I still could not load the site, but clearing all cookies from the site did the trick.
RSS wins again! We’ve got to get more people using RSS instead of email, “apps” and such.
I still couldn’t access the site, including this post, but then I did a web search for solutions to the error code, found instructions, and deleted the cookies for the site in my browser. Now all fine and dandy.
^^^ This is the fix
Like I said on Bluesky, I’m getting
“Request Header Fields Too Large
The server refused this request because the request header fields are too large.”
errors in Waterfox, but the most recent release of Waterfox specifically had some change to the User-Agent report, which I believe is part of the request header, so I assume it’s Waterfox’s fault and will get fixed eventually (until then I can just use Firefox!)
oops, not on Bluesky, it was right here on this very website
Clear your cookies on this site, I think I deleted the plugin that was causing them to build up. Using Firefox has just given you a clean cookie slate. I don’t know anything about Waterfox and you teaching me its name caused me to forget the word for a saw earlier and call it a sword.
That action really ought to be known as “Toss your cookies”.
Waterfox is a recent fork of the Firefox source code to remove every trace of AI from it, so it’s basically Firefox
We just bought a reciprocating sword not too long ago. Very useful.
Lordt! It worked! Given the way this issue commenced exactly contemporaneously with the new version of Waterfox arriving, it seemed natural to suppose that was the problem. But no! Clearing cookies did the trick! Huzzah!
Yay! I can see you again!
