I’m reminded of a TV quiz show I saw once where all contestants had their name tags printed with block capitals… except for the strangely styled (but obvious when you think about it) CLiNT.
Physicist are known for their brutal habit of approximating cows or chicken to perfect spheres; clowns handle balls and the likes for their whimsical crafts.
If who we saw in NEMS was really Mildred, she’s just taken the socially well regarded path to express her pierrotesque being.
I hope everybody has experienced the hometown pub pre-holiday friends’ reunion at least once! Around here it’s a Thanksgiving-eve tradition and it always lifts the spirits
I remember one specific one many years ago, when my entire high school graduating class seemed to be in this one pub in my mid-size hometown on Xmas eve – it was magical but if it was repeated alas, I was not there.
Unlike many of you, I don’t think Mildred is a closet clown. I think she’s just evil and that’s the evil leaking out in the most socially acceptable form. She’s the friend who helps you organize cow tipping and snipe hunts, and inappropriate hen parties for the unsuspecting.
Chaotic neutral, tending just a bit toward Good, I’d say. Though I don’t really think D&D alignments work very well to describe most non-D&D characters.
I tend to associate Chaotic Evil, even as a tendency, with a lot more murder, maiming, and bloodshed than anything Mildred’s ever been involved with. She can, however, on occasion, become very single-mindedly dedicated to righting some specific wrong or other. So I’d say her tendency is toward Good.
YEEEEEEESS! Can’t wait to see Mildred working with the Solver team. Meanwhile, Shelley’s plan to make Lottie interested in Jack is working. We may never know why she decided that the two are good for each other, but I’m starting to really like the idea.
This .horse strip suggests the possibility that all of Bobbins and Scary Go Round were just Shelley’s Bat-Like Man Gambit to get Ryan and Amy together.
Note that Amy’s “childish scribble” started out with Shelley going, “Let’s get tattoos together!” and then backing out last-second. Twice.
I actually had a cousin who dropped out of high school to attend a clown college (she later got her GED). She was pretty good at it and can juggle while riding a unicycle, demonstrable skills that are probably more useful than most of what I retained from high school. She even made pretty good money from various clown and circus gigs, especially since women are underrepresented among unicyclists.
I’m wondering if Jack didn’t end up going even further back to the 70s, where he wrote the lyrics to a certain movie song called “We Go Together”. I mean, the lyrics are indisputable evidence –
“Ramma lamma lamma, ka dingity ding da dong
Shoo bop shoo wadda wadda yippity boom da boom
Chang chang, changity chang shoo bop
Yip da dip da dip shoo bop sha dooby do”
etc.
How long ago did Lottie stop referring to Mildred as ‘Mildew’? Years and years ago, or Many, Many years ago? One needn’t quantify anymore precisely than that.
I could read an entire three-issue series that was just this bunch interacting with each other. Thank you so much for this.
Of COURSE. OBVIOUSLY. (Me too)
Could not agree more. Like Mildred I too miss the mystery days!
I imagine that there was always a part of Mildred that was always, then and forever, clown. Was that face painted on, or was it… Revealed?
It’s like making a sculpture
It’s already there, you just need to chisel the true form within
Deep down, I still suspect that Mildred was the real Clown Queen all along, and she set up the whole Circus Windows thing for Lottie’s benefit.
Ever since the appearance of John Cloake it was obvious it was all a clown joke.
Aha! A “Clohn Joake” no less!
She’s a closet Jugalo. I’ve always suspected.
When they’re circus clown-related, they’re called juggle-ohs.
It’s an embodiment.
Linton’s shaken fist from the car window! I love it!
While waving with the other hand!
But without the clowning around from almost a year ago, Lottie wouldn’t be in the same mental space today.
Not sure I want to go to The Unkind Physio.
When needs must
There’s a fitness place I’ve walked past that has the tagline “Burpees hate you too”, I think that’s the kind of vibe the Unkind Physio would go for
It would be such a bad name for a physio, I have to assume it’s a Wetherspoons or similar.
Maybe it’s actually the Linkind Physio, owned by Dr Linkind.
I mean, I did read that other sign on the street as “Skin Cunic” instead of “clinic” at first, so…

+1 for “pierrotesque”.
She is going to solve the Case of the Temporal Displacement
did John do us a bamboozle when he said the mystery of Jack in the 90s would go unsolved for the foreseeable future
I hope so
Perhaps it’s going to be solved in the past.
The forseeable past, at that

Unfortunately, it appears that Mildred will always be down to clown.
Unlike many of you, I don’t think Mildred is a closet clown. I think she’s just evil and that’s the evil leaking out in the most socially acceptable form. She’s the friend who helps you organize cow tipping and snipe hunts, and inappropriate hen parties for the unsuspecting.
Mildew’s not evil; she’s just a little Chaotic Neutral.
Chaotic neutral, tending just a bit toward Good, I’d say. Though I don’t really think D&D alignments work very well to describe most non-D&D characters.
Chaotic neutral with a slight tendency towards chaotic evil but a desire to be perceived as neutral good.
But then, who among us…
I tend to associate Chaotic Evil, even as a tendency, with a lot more murder, maiming, and bloodshed than anything Mildred’s ever been involved with. She can, however, on occasion, become very single-mindedly dedicated to righting some specific wrong or other. So I’d say her tendency is toward Good.
Mildred’s not evil, she’s just a bit fae.
I think “nutter” is the word we’re all looking for.
YEEEEEEESS! Can’t wait to see Mildred working with the Solver team. Meanwhile, Shelley’s plan to make Lottie interested in Jack is working. We may never know why she decided that the two are good for each other, but I’m starting to really like the idea.
What! You think this is a set up? I didn’t get that vibe at all but do tell, I am open to theories. That would be adorable.
Never doubt Shelley’s ability to mess with people. Especially with her friends. Even more with her puppils.

“…demonstrable skills that are probably more useful than most of what I retained from high school.”
100 percent.
I have a co-worker who got their PhD in clown and they definitely use it in the education field (sometimes).
Is she single?
One of the problems in Dutch health care is that Cliniclowns earn more money than actual nurses
It’s not official until she gets her clown egg
She GOT her egg. https://badmachinery.com/comic/2021-03-24/
That story was five years ago? Oh, lore…
Oh. She’s definitely a clown for life then. (Down to clown)
AMAZING pull. Really impressive/scary(go round).
I wonder if Mildred had anything to do with rescuing Jack. Or maybe with putting him in his predicament in the first place.
I wonder if Lottie will have been* involved in Jack’s rescue, hence Shelley pointing her at Jack the way she did.
*Lottie’s future, Jack and Shelley’s past. As time-travel tenses go, that one’s not too convoluted.

Lottie’s called her “Mildew” as recently as “Wobbly Head”. That was about two months ago, their time.
It just hit me- who’s driving Jack and Linton?
Uber?
Linton’s always been driven by the pursuit of justice. And girls.
It’s a little indistinct but it looks like Linton’s dad to me. The little moustache is dinstinctive.
