The wall of humanity
I was still ill when i drew this, but fortunately I’d worked it all out when I was writing it. All I had to spend the morning at a buffet. So many new friends to meet there.

It’s like “Where’s Wally?” for old people
Also, I love the progression of items building up on their plates
I expected to learn about box springs but instead was treated to a multi-national with specialty products such as comfort systems and hydraulic cylinders. What a time to be alive!
I ran a big risk here in not looking up the spurious URL I wrote on that friendly older gentleman’s jumper.
I like the orange trays. Very American school cafeteria!
All I know about Googie Withers is a joke by the Two Ronnies- “Tonight we’ll be talking about Googie Withers……and what to do if yours does.”
Just look at that wall of humanity in the lower right corner.
My only experience of Googie Withers was Within These Walls, so I’m sure I’m missing out on a lot. She was quite prolific.
Chekhov’s Glenn spotted by Little’s glimpse.
But will she recognize him? Has she ever seen the back of him with hoodie deployed?
And, Claire is a tea drinker! Something else to like about her!
It looks to me like that Wall of Humanity Lottie mentions at the start of the page is between Claire (and Lottie) and Glenn. I don’t think she can see him.
Another great splash page conveying our leads in motion amid multiple characters from John! Even while under the weather this was a masterful job!
Wow, you can get your own personal pot of tea! How civilized.
A lot of the British reputation for high society protocol comes down to very specific requirements for having tea
Kind of reassuring to see the ferry fine dining experience is transferrable to the Pacific as well.
(Although… gather, children, and I will tell you the tale of glorious decadent abundance that was the Pacific Buffet on each Spirit Class BC Ferries vessel. A huge salmon they had, aye, and a roast beef carving station, along with every manner of side salad known to human eyes.)
It did not survive the pandemic. RIP.
A roast beef carving station is the mark of a good buffet!
So the Bank Manager would tell Glenn that they were insolvernt?
Won’t someone please help the poor gentleman with the single arm-cruch?
…crutch…
A glimpse inside the mind of Glomp, there. I wonder what other revelations the sea-bridge will bring to him?
The guy in glasses just North of Glerrmb reminds me of a dentist I once knew
Is that the travel ‘influencer’ from the previous page you reckon?
That figure reminds me of Daniel Pinkwater.
Wonderful page. So balanced, elegant and also funny. So good. I’m starting hoping all the next will be about Claire and Lottie searching for Glenn like this, finding him only 3 or 4 pages before the end.
I knew of Googie Withers only through a strange joke of my father’s, which never really landed because we didn’t know who GW was.
At least until I happened to spend an evening in her and her husband’s company, watching Strictly Come Dancing in 2007. They were very excited about their friend Stephanie Beecham being in it.
This is a true story.
Now THIS is Googie Withers material!!!!
Like when Daisy was transported to the 1930s of the mind in the Giant Days snooker comic.
So Claire is banker loopy?
