Gippy
I was still ill when I drew this. And when I turned my Cintiq on that morning, well, it didn’t turn on, for after being on hand for about 900 pages. It had died, a loyal soldier. I had to dig out a small and ancient back-up to make this page and despite the headwinds, as is so often the case, I raised my game and brought you the GRABBO machine. No charge, friends. No charge.

Not just GRABBO, but also MYSTERIOUS APE!
MYSTERIOUS APE intrigues me.
A poster filled with nothing but John Allison fever-dream arcade machines would likely be an instant buy from me.
We need a John Allison themed pinball machine.
I think MYSTERIOUS APE should be out again soon on the next Evercade cartridge.
I think that I used to have the C64 port of RUM-HAM.
That’s actually the SEGA Harbour Master game in panel one. Rum-Ham seems to be some sort of onomatopoeic sound effect.
Rum-Ham was what they called it in Japan, due to the country’s well-known dislike for harbourmasters.
Interestingly, it’s also a popular regional dish in the Øresund region of Denmark and Sweden. It can also be made with akvavit if you’re low on rum.
Rum ham is popular in Philadelphia, too.

I wonder if they have Unicorn Frenzy.
It’s eerie how the Grabbo Desmond dolls always seem to be watching you
I don’t recall ever seeing Harbour Master on Mysterious Ape; the arcade video games I played were a lot earlier and more primitive (Space Invaders, Defender and Galaga)
Of course you’re confused. He just made all that up.
You take that back!
I’ll not sit on the other side of the planet and have you malign John in that way
That’s entirely too many Fishmans.
And at least one Paul Scoville as well!
Too bad there aren’t any trampolines on ferries (probably not a good idea anyway) then chances of Glorm being there would be near 100%.
The last ferry I was on did have a bouncy castle. For the kiddos.
Somehow larval Desmonds Fishman are even worse than the regular one.
Or are they “Fishmen”?
Oh, I know where this is headed.
The sun sets on Lottie Grote.
The moon rises on CARLOTTA.
I suffer horribly from motion sickness. The pills do work, but they also do put me right to sleep. I literally need to go see my doctor again about it. I had an episode the other day from getting under my pickup to change the oil. It sounds crazy, but similar situations have happened to me a number of times. I’m not claustrophobic, and I used to be a mechanic and spent half the time under trucks and tractors.
They tell me it’s age, but I’ve had problems with this since I was a teenager. I have to take medication on boats and airplanes, and driving at night in the rain is problematic.
I’m sorry you’re going through that. I didn’t get any form of motion sickness until my late thirties and it thankfully so far only happens with reading for more than a minute or two near a window while riding in a car, which is easily avoided. The sensation the first two times when I was figuring out what was happening was absolutely horrible.
Ugh. Reading int he car/train/bus is the worst. I can barely look at my phone if I’m moving. Thank the goddess for audio books and podcasts.
I thank you for your commiseration.
If this world had goodness in it, Desmond Fishman would be as big as the minions, and this Grabbo machine would exist in real life.
I get sick looking out the car windows, spent my childhood throwing up every where we went. I learned to read and ignore the lovely scenery. Always been contrary.
I used to get horribly car sick when I was a kid, regardless of whether I was looking out the window or not. It went away completely by the time I grew up.
When I was… 16 or 17? I went to Europe with my grandparents- first time I crossed the Atlantic (out of twice). We spent a couple of weeks in France, then crossed the channel to England, at which point my grandparents got sick and we had to cut our journey short. The craft we crossed the Channel on was called the Viking Victory. I remember I felt really sick below deck, but was fine above- I felt like my seasickness was caused by the discrepancy between the motion I was feeling and the lack of motion visually, so when I was up on deck and could actually see everything moving around, I felt fine. I’ve been on many boats since then, even slept on a boat, and have never felt seasick again, as far as I can remember. On the otehr hand, very, very occasionally, I’ll suddenly get really dizzy when walking on solid ground.
But do they make you see frame breaking eyes, because that seems bad for the ships structural integrity.
I hope your doctor has good news for you! The vestibular system is super important, as you know by now. There’s been an incredible amount of research into all the relevant areas of medicine (neurological, cerebral, etc) and there’s a good chance they’ll know something now that wasn’t known at all when you were younger.
A friend of mine discovered in 2007 that she has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I predicted there would be a treatment within 20 years, and the latest research seems to be on target for that estimate.
I hope my post raises your optimism. 🙂
I’m not sanguine about my options. I’ve talked to various doctors about this over the years and done plenty of research and experimentation. The consensus is it’s a neurological problem in the interface between my visual cortex and my balance mechanism. What my eyes and my proprioception feels is different from what my vestibular balance is indicating. This is why it can hit me in a cinema when I’m not actually in motion at all. This happens to most people as they age, but it hit me early. Very early.
Unfortunately it kinda sneaks up on me. If I know I’m going on a boat or an airplane I can take medication and be fine, but if I’m driving home late and an unexpected rainstorm hits it can be a real problem. I keep meclazine in my pickup to take if that happens, but once it’s happened it takes a while for the medication to counteract it. Some movies are fine, but some sneak up on me. I had to walk out of the 2009 Star Trek and lay down in the lobby to wait for my friends. I later watched it on a small screen and it was a lot better. Shouldn’t have bothered. It’s a dumb movie.
Why isn’t the iconic Sega Lobster in the new Sonic crossover racing game
Uh, oh. Those eyes in the darkness leaking shoggoth-like out of the respectable frame at the end there remind me of Lottie’s nocturnal experiences when she was… not in her best place, emotionally or mentally. https://badmachinery.com/comic/2022-06-24/
Next page even more so. https://badmachinery.com/comic/2022-06-27/
It’s not like they’re operating the ferry. What could possibly go wrong?
A widespread food poisoning outbreak somehow results in Lottie having to take the wheel of the ferry! She should have gotten some practice in on Sega Harbourmaster when she had the chance.
“By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to operate a ferry?”
I wonder what kind of heavy machinery Lottie and Claire will have to handle and why… Glenn falling from the ferry seems a possible motivation.
Will they have to use the claw from the Grabbo machine to fish him out of the drink?
Checkov’s Grabbo was what I had in mind, too
Hopefully the machinery isn’t bad
I had to reread that after seeing “heavy artillery” on the first pass. :O
Heavy artillery probably should not be operated while drowsy, either.
Another Stugeron here now, get that straight down the ‘atch – lovvveellyyyyy
That Grabbo machine is infested with Giant Days woodworm!!
Ooo some corner spookies
Gippy, for those unaware, is short for gipper, or more accurately, The Gipper, which is another term for Reaganesque. Lottie is evidently feeling virulent disaffection for communism. That’s what my friend Jack tells me, anyway.
If Dean’s reply to Andrew Hall, above, is accurate, this may be more of a case of winning one for the Zipper.
It’s morning in America!!!
Better than mourning in America.
Down the hatch! A most curious phrase.
as expensive as Cintiq’s are they should last until the sun dims and the seas dessicate
Also, is “Rum Ham” a Always Sunny in Philadelphia reference or does it mean something else across the poind?
It’s an Always Sunny reference!
If you’re going to spew, spew in this [helpfully offers paper cup]
I still think about this line all the time.
Go Kanvas Huion.
A lot cheaper and just as good.
4K too.
Don’t like any of the challenger brands, they all feel like a step down in terms of drawing from Wacom (Apple is worse too). I’ve been using Wacom tablets since 2000.
Cintiqs being so expensive it might be worth it to get it repaired by an independent shop (Wacom’s own service if out of warranty would likely be £££ expensive).
Could be just a faulty power port, crimped cable or a blown fuse or capacitor, something that wouldn’t be that hard a fix. Depending on its age, you could also have the CFL backlight tube replaced, the old one is probably quite aged and no longer colour accurate.
It broke two months ago, don’t let it concern you. I bought a new one so I could continue working uninterrupted.
