Comics
Just a quick update. After having to take down the Conan comics I have been back at the drawing board. I’ve almost finished writing a new Solver issue and will begin running pages once I have a decent buffer of pages in the bank – probably at the beginning of June (TBC). It’s been tough to get writing from a standing start (and the results may be somewhat wayward) but, as ever, I will endeavour to entertain you going forward.
Lovely panel, John. We await patiently and gratefully.
Let’s see if it will evolve to one of those animated gifs from the late 1990s…
Lottie+Claire under construction gif!
Great news!
So sorry about the Conan thing, was really enjoying that, but love all your work so much regardless!
I would imagine you’ve already thought of this, but is this a situation where the CBLDF would intervene?
Maybe. But I’m done with it now.
CBLDF?
Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. An organisation that defends the legal interests of comic book creators.
We’ll be here. Waiting…interminably waiting.
Hurray, he lives! And Lottie is back 😀
Still think you should change the character’s name to Konan and if the idiots complain again, remind them that in the US, parody is protected by the 1st Amendment.
But I also think you should do whatever feels best.
I’m just gonna say it once: Colin the Barbarian. Give the lad a chance to redeem himself.
Barbie the Clonian
Canon the Librarian! Or maybe the Contrarian!
Thank you for slogging on, your comics have long been three bright spots in my week. I have your Patreon but would never think of reading a whole story at a gulp. Re-reading, yes of course. I would pay to have your entire body of published work as a digital collection, should such a thing ever become available.
I hope to see no less than two competing subplots mocking frivolous corporate cease and desist letters. Kidding! I have no idea how you do what you do at the pace you do it. Please rest yourself until you’re truly ready to work again. Until that august day, I will paw wildly at the hem of your robe just for the occasional sketch like this!
I do hope “august” can remain non-capitalized in this case!
<3
That’s right – less than 3 fortnights until we get new pages from John!
Ah! that’s what it means. I thought it was maybe an emoji ass or perhaps a pair of tits
Great news! Since ‘Lost’ ended, there hasn’t been enough media featuring menacing clouds. Congratulations on spotting this gap in the market!
I will read a phone book if you’ve drawn it. But I’m glad you’re creatively recovering. If you don’t make it at the beginning of June, though, we’ll still be here. Thanks for your stories.
Huzzah!
This is the best news possible. Thanks, John, for all you do.
I think this might be the happiest I’ve been to see a new update on this page. Heartbroken all of that happened, but all the more delighted to see the dawning of the next thing. As always, so grateful to have your comics, John.
Take your time! And, anyways, we understand the situation.
You are a true stalwart, Mr. Allison.
Thank you for all you do!
Thank you for pushing on and continuing to make wonderful things. I’ve never commented before, but I started reading your work as an awkward 13yr old, and I turn 30 this year. Whatever else has happened through those years, you’ve made me smile at least three times a week. I’m so excited to see what you have in store for us next – whenever you’re ready!
Thank you Erin! What a compliment.
I’d bet a lot of us have a similar tale 🙂 John’s stories have kept me company from 18 through to 35. An entire market demographic!
I have a similar story — I started reading at 18 and I turn 40 this month. I have a 14-year-old kid who grew up reading Bad Machinery and will probably graduate into Giant Days soon.
I will always read everything you’re involved in. I adore your art, but I love that working with other artists has allowed you to share even more stories with us. I have complete faith in everything you do and I will patiently wait until there’s something new for us. ❤️
Your artistic creativity has my trust, forever and forever…
June is, since forever, my favourite month. Now there’s another motivation for this.
I’m still sad that we’ll likely never see the conclusion to your Conan story, John, but I’m glad to see you’re moving on, anyway. I look forward to seeing our Solver friends in a new adventure, and to hopefully see Lottie begin to pull herself out of the hole she’s in. (Come to think of it, there’s at least a little similarity between what Lottie went trough with D-Slide and what happened to you with Conan- not exactly the same thing, but there’s some similarity…) I have utmost faith in you to keep us audience members enthralled, whatever direction you go in. (And new pages in the beginning of June would be a very nice birthday present for me, for what it’s worth…)
A nice birthday present for me, as well.
Based on previous performance, you will undoubtedly succeed in your endeavor to entertain.
This is wonderful news and I can’t wait to see Lottie & the rest of the Solver cast return.
As far the Conan fiasco goes – well, just think of the poor grand-nephews of REH being deprived of a pittance royalty check, the poor suffering dears. If you can’t rely on the hard work of a long-dead relation for pub money, what IS the world coming to?
It had nothing to do with REH’s family, at all. It’s a company that bought up the Conan trademark and some related rights about a decade ago.
I, like others, was disappointed by the abrupt and legally dubious forced end to the Conan story. I was really enjoying it, and then you were forced to shut it down. However, I have to admit I’ve been eagerly hoping for a continuation of Solver since the last story ended, and am ecstatic that it’s going to be the next story. Hooray! more solver! I shall count the days.
Will you count them sequentially, or will you assign random numbers to each day?
Some unimaginative clods might argue that it only satisfies the definition of “counting” if the numbers progress in a sequential manner (in either ascending or descending order), but that’s BORING. The sky’s the limit! Maybe I’ll give each new day a unique name or something. I hereby name this day “Burton”.
Huzzah!
Very happy to see that you were not tooooo disheartened by that take-down idiocy! Best wishes.
I was really enjoying the Conan story. Could you not just have renamed to…… Let’s say….: “Bonar the Bavarian” and had him wär something in white and blue?
I’m done with it Ray, sorry.
I was going to make my own suggestion on how we could use the way back machine to get around this, but I guess I won’t bother.
I’d been away for a month so I missed the start of this disaster but am not too surprised.
The creepy assault against free speech in recent years has been death by a million teeny tiny cuts. The flagrant abuse of trade marks to circumvent public domain against small creators is among the most common razors doing the cutting.
In the wake of Conan, I must say, Lottie and Claire back in the saddle are a very welcome sight. We’re with you all the way John!
I guess I should’ve eaten the cookie when I had the chance!! A lesson is learned.
Keep up the good work John, we got your back.
Since the cookie is no longer available to be eaten, I suppose you could also say that the damage is irreversible…
Disappointed that this doesn’t have more upvotes. I assume that the comic has fallen into obscurity due to its lack of a TikTok presence. Last updated one million years ago, ALILBTDII is amazing. Look upon their works ye mighty and despair.
go John, go !
I was really enjoying the thing with The Barbarian What Must Not Be Named, and am very annoyed at the IP trolls who made you take it down. But I’m glad we’re getting back to Solver. I’ve been worried about Claire, with all these months of waiting in the rain for a Grote who never comes.
Trade Mark abuse has just been getting worse since Disney had to FINALLY let the mouse go; this particular incident here feels like part of a wider experiment to see how much they can get away with it, given that similar fan stories have been previously going up on Deviant Art, but I have not checked on them recently, I have to wonder if they are still up.
Wayward is good, right?
Ah, such excite!
Ahoy! I see something on the horizon…!
Carry on my wayward solver,
There’ll be peace when you resolve your
Issues of a life gone well wrong.
Sorry for doggereling this song.
(opening lyrics from the first song on Arkansas’ “Right Over Here” album)
Huzzah! Upcoming comics titles! Claire’s long wait in the rain has a definite end.
