I have not seen the original, but I saw panel 3 and thought it looked like cover art from something (I was thinking some 70’s sci-fi paperback). It is neat, nonetheless.
Reprinted in early issues of Marvel UK’s Transformers comic, which is where I wager Jon A first saw it, alongside a generation of like-minded Britlings.
It has been collected in the Iron Man 2020 trade paperback, which may be easier to find than the individual issues these days, and also features a Death’s Head appearance, for proper Marvel UK synchronicity.
I’m truly surprised that the venn diagram of people who know the BWS cover and fans of John A is so close to a circle. Well done on being the first comment.
Was BWS one of the artists on Conan? I seem to remember the early issues of “Cerebus,”*** Dave Sim copied his style as part of his Conan parody. I’d love to see more of his art.
*** “I still have it somewhere, in bags, in a box, in a basement…”
He was the first artist on Marvel’s Conan comic. He was later replaced by John Buscema as the primary artist. Marvel Conan fans tend to be divided on which of the two was the definitive Conan artist.
Indeed, I recognized it immediately, though I confess the name “Barry Windsor Smith” didn’t immediately jump to my memory. I re-read it not that long ago, a little conflicted that I’d reached the far future of 2020 the hard way, much like the unfortunate protagonist, now that I think of it. No time travel in that story, MM just gets tossed in a scrap heap and rebuilt decades later like battle angel Alita.
Now I feel very bad for poor Glenn. Look at the look of hope on his face in the last panel, and contrast it with Lottie’s extremely self-centered attitude.
Is it a tribute to Mark Manning? The dog water sign in the first panel might be a minimalist version of ZapDog from Rock’n’Roll Doylums. However, that would mean our new character is the equivalent of Sigmund B Fraud, and that’s not a nice thought.
I love Lottie’s predatory expression and rapacious hands when she thinks she can use Glenn and offers him her totally disinterested help. But Claire is right, this is pure evilness, that poor man is in pain! As a result, I begin to think that Claire and Glenn would make a good couple.
Yes yes, got it immediately. The pattern on the lining inside Lottie’s coat is a clear reference to Charles Schulz (Charlie Brown’s sweater, if you’re bit slow). Done. What do I win?
I drew a Pulp poster at the edge of a panel on the last page of the current story but it was dashed-off at high speed, Jarvis specs, a Mackey fringe, a little Candida Doyle.
I think Claire needs to rethink. It’s obvious that Grln is undergoing a crisis. but less clear what the actual nature of that crisis is. I tend to think that he needs to get back to being involved in humanity, which his job seems devoid of. Lottie’s gut-level intuition can be the antidote to the inhuman artificial intelligence that has poisoned poor Gmlyrn.
Or has Claire decided she’s what’s good for him and considers Lottie competition?
Lottie said “help”, but what she’s actually describing sounds a lot more like “exploit”. She’s focusing on what Gershwin can do for her, not what she and Claire can do for him.
Which is not to say that Lottie and Claire couldn’t be good for Garmin. The Shauna/Lottie/Mildred trio worked because each of them provided things the others needed: Shauna’s strength and stability, Lottie’s creativity and intuition, Mildred’s daring and wiles (not just the “feminine” kind, but later in the run, those too). Lottie, Claire, and Glenn might make that kind of team, too, but not as long as Lottie is only thinking about it in terms of what he can do for her. Maybe she could start by learning his name.
Panel 3 is amazing. It reminds me of Barry Windsor-Smith’s cover art for the mid ’80s Machine Man limited series.
That would be the artistic tribute mentioned above, I’d wager.
I loved that mini-series. I still have it somewhere, in bags, in a box, in a basement…

I don’t think there are any bad answers there.
BWS drew a young, lean Conan, which very well fits the period where he’s a raiding youth just escaped from slavery.
Buscema drew a thicker, more grizzled Conan, which matches his later years and King Conan period to a T.
For an additional treat from the period, check out this picture of BWS with Wendy Pini of Elfquest cosplaying as Red Sonja.
BWS is an amazing artist, everything he did back in the day was golden. The Machine Man series is a personal favourite but there are many other gems.

Ok but that’s why she met him in the first place. It’s different now because… She’s acknowledges she needs help but also is more clearly in control?
Wow! I get the feeling that Claire is not bluffing in the last panel!
…she’s even lisping!
Claire and Lottie will never be divided by something as trivial as woo woo thinking.
Lottie’s occasional tendency to treat people as things, though?
Well, it hasn’t broken them up yet. And gods know Claire’s been dealing with it for long enough.
Obviously the artistic tribute is the final panel, which is a clear reference to Rembrandt’s “The Cappuccino Frappé of Dr. Nicholaes Tukp”
✅ Got the aigu on Frappé
✅ Made sure I spelled “Nicholaes” correctly
✅ Screwed up “Tulp”
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
Now I feel very bad for poor Glenn. Look at the look of hope on his face in the last panel, and contrast it with Lottie’s extremely self-centered attitude.
LOTTIE: Of course we’re going to help Gorf.
GORF: INSERT COIN
GORF! Some galactic defender you are, Space Cadet!
Is it a tribute to Mark Manning? The dog water sign in the first panel might be a minimalist version of ZapDog from Rock’n’Roll Doylums. However, that would mean our new character is the equivalent of Sigmund B Fraud, and that’s not a nice thought.
Lottie, listen to Claire when her lisp resurfaces.

Getting some cyberpunk vibes from panel 3.

Lottie has clearly developed her own variant of Esther’s renowned ‘Skull Eye’.
She learned at the knee of the master.
Yes yes, got it immediately. The pattern on the lining inside Lottie’s coat is a clear reference to Charles Schulz (Charlie Brown’s sweater, if you’re bit slow). Done. What do I win?
“A pint of dog water please barman. What do you mean you can’t serve me that? You managed it the last time I ordered a round.”
I got strong vibes of Chronowar Vol. 1
But I now see that was probably a tribute to Machine Man, which I was ignorant of.

It feels kind of Jack Kirby to me…
I’m guessing that’s Richard Hammond on the poster. Is he hosting a pub quiz?
Richard Hawley!
Ah. I thought I knew a thing or two about britpop, but that chap was completely off my radar, despite the Pulp connection.
He became quite a big star post-Britpop. I would think he still plays big venues.
Btw, I find it most unfair that you’ve even featured Batman, but no Jarvis!
I drew a Pulp poster at the edge of a panel on the last page of the current story but it was dashed-off at high speed, Jarvis specs, a Mackey fringe, a little Candida Doyle.
Panel 3: Masamune Shirow, “Gorf in the Shell”
turnkey solution to lottie’s problems or ticking mental health time bomb? a man can be two things!
In fact, being the former can lead to being the latter.

Ygln *is* a handsome young chap in a kind of “Franz Ferdinand” sort of way.
