Wait- it just hit me. A couple of pages ago, we saw Claire astrally projecting. Now, here she is magically summoning a word. Is Claire secretly some sort of sorceress or something? Because that would actually make a lot of sense.
Yeah, her spell list is burning hands, flaming sphere, scorching ray, fireball, fire shield, orb of fire, wall of fire, astral projection, and summon expository text.
The clip is from That’s Life!, a BBC television programme which mixed off-beat humour like this with hard-hitting journalism on consumer rights issues and was wildly popular through the 1970s and into the 80s, eventually lasting until 1994. Prince, the dog that said “sausages”, first appeared in 1979, and was indeed from Sheffield. Whether Glenn knows any of this, or if he’s just instinctively picked it up in some mystic way from the fabric of Sheffield, we are left to guess. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/That%27s_Life!
One of the great things about the internet is it means I, at very much the wrong end of the country, could go “oh yeah! Mike’s carpets, with the telly ads”
Claire cares so much for Glenn and is confused by Lottie’s behavior. Maybe she should listen to Glenn, she might end up enjoying following him in wanting to see funny things. She could use a distraction.
Claire once again demonstrates her desire to control the uncontrollable: fire, who sits next to you on public transport, boys’ wandering minds, and Charlotte Grote.
Also seems like nominally controllable things (i.e. Glenn seems like a very on-task person in general) go out of control when she tries to grasp them! Perhaps her fingers are just too small?
Gloom has a touch of the Beckwith about him in those last two panels, I think. That “no, no… but I might pop along” has Bobbins-era Ryan’s brand of suspiciously specific vagueness.
Is he really from Te Awamutu or are you on a Split Enz bender lately
Either way, this kiwi says “tee hee”
Chur
And this one!
John’s definitely on a Finn-based trip this time, the Finn Bros album art was on Glem’s wall in an earlier strip.
Claire casts Summon Expository Text!
“Snausages”
Thauthageth ?
I fear there’ll be a Claire-boot-sized dent in Glenn’s backside in a minute.
I love Claire’s newfound power to magically summon the word ‘SOON”.
It’s very possible that she’s always had this power, but it’s just not something that comes up very often.
But it will come up again… *SOON*.

She’s running the prestige class Immolatent.
Burning barns more like
Claire as Agatha to Charlotte’s Wanda works for me.

Where exactly in New Zealand is Te Awamutu? I’m guessing it’s a Māori name?
North Island, just south of Hamilton
Maybe Shauna could come down and be very metal indeed for Meadowhall Talent Stage.
.. or maybe Ljubjana could appear, if Shauna is unavailable.

It’s more easy to control fire than Charlotte Grote. Claire needs to understand that.
Listen to the wise Bush Baby, Glum.
Thteering? Scissoring? Apparently I don’t speak lisp.
“Steering”
I uh, feel like this would be a very different sort of comic if Scissoring Lottie was what Claire was talking about?
Mikes Carpets! “Can I get felt?” https://youtu.be/r9giGnsov94
Can you get an audible scrolling sound for your phone?
