Should I reply?
A gnomic communique from Cloake. Did I search Google for “texts from grandparents?” Well I didn’t not if you know what I mean.

I hope whatever is going on with Shauna becomes a sidequest.
Would be nice to see what Wickle’s up to these days.
Xauna Wickle?
X—actly what I was thinking.
“Shaunax” has a nice ring to it.
I was thinking “Wicklex.” ‘Cause it sounds funnier.
Wixle
Xhauna. Sxauna. Shxna. Shaunx. I can see why it’s a dilemma.
The X Shauna Wickle. Shauna X. XXXXXX XXXXXX ( redacted )
Shauna 3Xwickle. ( the 3 is silent )
WicXle. Yes, it remains capitalised even though it’s in the middle. She’s also rejecting capitalisation norms.
Actually trying to think about it, Shaunx makes the most sense. It’s right between the masculine Shaun and the feminine Shauna.
xXshaunaXxXwickleXx
For some reason Shxuna was my first instinct. Either way I miss Wickle, hope we can see them again someday.
I see that I need to step up my commenting game, here, if I’m going to put my hand to it.
Rei Malebario’s and Joe King’s “X” options get my votes. Any takers for Shaunx WicXle?
Haversham helps Grote grasp WicXle’s whereabouts.
The adorable smiling egg yolk in panel 3 looks like it’s a reference to something, but I don’t know what.
I think it’s a custard or pudding. They sell such things at our local Japanese market. Lots of sweet treats with faces on them. Dessert should always have the frisson of murder.
It looks like a lighting fixture to me.
My first thought in answer to Cloake’s query is club soda. That makes me think of seltzer, which in turn is something that some clowns like to spray around. So the text message is not the non-sequitur it may first seem…
Shaunbinary
Gender Shaun-conforming
A dessert is always a very good idea! Especially Ice cream ♡♡♡. Anb GO SHAUNA!
Something unexpected, Shauna being in touch with Mildred rather than Lottie.
Seemed to me that the relationship between Shauna and Mildred was strained. Apparently they outgrew that, while Lottie has been going in another direction.
I remember Shauna and Lottie did patch up things in the last Bad Machinery story. My guess is that they’re still friends but not as close as they used to be, especially with Lottie losing the most touch with her and Mildred.
Although LC pronounced them “best friendth again” at the end of Severed Alliance, the “growing apart” that occurred after they sacrificed their friendship in The Big Hiatus is apparently permanent. They’re still, for the moment, on different paths.
????
Also, we have a Cloake; do we get a Dagger as well?
Woohoo! Word of Shauna and it seems like she’s doing Ok!
I’m trying to determine if “How to get heavy cream out of a bedspread” is some sort of Cockney Rhyming Slang for “Meet me at the Tipsy Milkmaid in South Tackleford” but so far…I got nothin’
He thought he was typing it into Google. Or Bing.
If only this comic had happened to coincide with Ed Balls Day.
Every day is Ed Balls Day for the pure at heart
Ask Jeeves?
“Heavy Cream” could be a euphemism, in which case he’s implying she’s a tart.
Is the cream…CUSTARD?
This actually makes me sad, that Lottie and Shauna aren’t keeping in touch with each other. Like Shelley and Amy, they were a true force to be reckoned with when together, even as formidable as they are on their own.
I can only hope a reunion is in their futures, though, as with all things, I trust Mr. Allison to do what he feels is best.
Same, always sad to see how they’ve drifted apart. Real life can be like that tho sometimes so idk we’ll see what ends up happening with them.
Shauna’s probably got a side buzz and is enby.
Either that or she is MASTER OF CLOWNS I’m calling it
This would be so good. We know that she can pull off white-face makeup from The Case of the Modern Men (which is still one of my favorite reveals.)
That’s my favorite story; full stop.
I think the question on everyone’s lips is has Shauxna figured out what to do with here (their?) hair?
When I was a kid, girls would add a Y into their name, like Jane -> Jayne. Now it’s an X. Truly, a regression (alphabetically.)
Probably still ‘her:’ Mildred would have asked, and she’d make sure to use whatever pronouns ShaXna said to use. …Unless Mildred is about six weeks away from coming out to her horrified parents as a Tory, which wouldn’t surprise me because she’s always been a bit rebellious.
For no particular reason… Richard Thompson. “The Great Valerio”
Actually, should have added Linda Thompson, as well. And “Walking on a Wire”
News item: 4Q 2020 Gallup poll finds that 1 in 6 Gen Z (18-23 y/o) now identify as non-heterosexual. About the right age for our trio here now. Which will our Shauna be? Shawn? Shaxn? Non-Binary (-)?
God, I’m glad I’m not 18-23 again, it was hard enough understanding the opposite sex as it was!
If you’ll read back through the last few adventures, it’s actually Sonny who’s non-heterosexual. Which would actually be our “one in six” of the original cast of Lottie, Shauna, Mildred, Jack, Linton, and Sonny.
For the record, gender identity and sexuality are unrelated, so whether or not one is heterosexual would have no bearing on how they express gender-wise.
They’re indirectly related, in that someone with a particular sexual preference might flip between hetero- and non- (or vice-versa) by transitioning, e.g. moving from a girl who prefers boys to a boy who still prefers boys.
Shauna Lives!
