Truly microscopic concerns
Dean has filled poor Glenn full of mead and now all he can do is inexpertly attack a kebab. A sore head tomorrow, but an overwhelming sense of a job well done.
I got nervous after making this comic that “happy as a sandboy” is racist, but apparently a sandboy was a youth paid to collect dry sand from coastal caves to spread on saloon bar floors. I know. Dodged a bullet there.
Glime’s finger seems to have a similar relationship with French as Lottie does (kinda homophonous).
…although ironically, “j’accuse” is a phrase Lottie has used correctly a few times.
I recall Shauna once deploying “Jack Hughes.” Maybe the issue is that one has to be Charlotte Grote to get it right.
Lottie’s “j’accuse” developed in power over the years. By “Space is the Place”, she could knock someone down with it.
I didn’t notice that this is great.
More Des merchandise lurking in the background! Who has he signed with? And why did they sign him at all?
To my possibly dubious knowledge ‘happy as a sandboy’ (that is to say, drunk) referred to chronic alcoholics who could only find work collecting sand for saloons in exchange for their liquor.
One of Lottie’s charts shows the ominous prefix “fish”.
…with “hosta” right under it. Rather ominously, to my mind.
…UNDERLINED SEVERAL TIMES!!!
Possibly “Fish Hostage”?
In checking for other possible words starting with “hosta,” I learned that “hosta” itself is an actual word – an eastern Asian plant also known as “plantain lily.” Ignoring plurals, those are the only two “hosta-” words in my computer’s dictionary.
There is a hosta farm down the road from us. They are those low plants with the two-tone leaves. In the 90s you were nobody unless you had hostas by your front stoop. Where I live, it is still the 90s.
I had limited success with my hostas, they were always monstered by slugs.
They are not always two-tone. In my part of the mid-Atlantic coastal U.S., they are surprisingly popular plantings, in various leaf patterns. And yes, they are a favorite food of slugs and also of deer. Yet their popularity persists.
Hostas are so underappreciated! They are hardy as heck and thrive in dark where other plants fail. And they’re perennial so you only have to plant them once, AND, they clump, so you can divide them and have more, free hostas to share with friends! #hostas
I’m thinking “fish” is the begining of “Fishman”…
I want a Des washbag more than I can say.
Should anyone want some Des merch, Denton the Squishmallow is your copyright infringing friend: https://chocoloonstoys.com/products/squishmallows-12-gecko-soft-toy
Definitely a gecko – nothing fishlike at all about Desm- er, Denton.
Bat-like-man paJamies. Charlotte has teh style.
Also, congratulations to the 68.5% of y’all who called this.
Maybe Esther has regaled her with tales of a brief encounter from years ago.
The long-awaited return of Jack Hughes!
Ygln may need help in cleansing the auditory processing parts of his brain, though. You leave that stuff in there too long and it’ll mark you permanent, pardner!
Requesting a clarification for “sandboy” for those of us west of the Atlantic.
It’s right under the comic.
Wow, sounds like a very 18th/19th century occupation right up there with “powder boy/powder monkey.”

Thanks but the link is broken
It’s a strange link, and it doesn’t click well. Here’s a shortened version: https://bit.ly/2Br0qZZ
That worked, thanks. Thanks also to John for showing me under the comic.
is that an alter to fishman ion the window?
This may be the last we see of this kebab, but I suspect Glemm(m) will see it again pretty soon.
Poor Glenn, he seems to be deeply shocked by Dean. Lottie’s plan is so crazy that could work. Or be a total disaster and double Claire’s bus problems adding Dean as a nuisance, and Dean is WAY less nice than her current nuisance!
You can’t go wrong when you’re sleeping on the mattress rated #7 on the internet!
I wonder what is the significance of The Third Policeman in panel 2. And is it worth reading?
I was arrested by that book too, but have no evidence to share. Perhaps more will be revealed about this undercover tome later [**is expelled with extreme prejudice**] …
Yes
Yes, read The Third Policeman.
It’s a novel. I haven’t read it myself, but I’ve heard good things about it.
O´Brian´s masterpiece, very strange even for his standards, two or more pints of stout recommended before reading
O´Brien of course curse this quick writing
You should definitely market Lottie’s purple bat-jimjams. I’d buy a pair.
Whoever had matching Claire Nuisance up with Dean is the winner! Although the result being Children is scary.
Dunno. I think Dean could become a great father. He’s weird, but has a lot of love to offer.
“The children” could refer to the schoolchildren in Dean’s charge.
The Ben Stiller character in Royal Tenenbaums comes to mind. Caring to a fault.
The thought of poor Claire on the bus with both the Nuisance and DT is horrifying. Flames would ensue.
If that is how her plan is going to ends, Lottie will have the moral obligation to always go to the bus with Claire and share the experience.
It’s probably just me but I dearly want to see the rota chart in the shared house hanging anywhere else than over the lone female occupant’s bed
It’s the coffee shop rota!
I just wanted to see what strange tasks would be listed on the rota
Ha! Well spotted and I applaud your feminism. But John A would never!!! (Sidenote: I didn’t know what a Rota was but was too shy to ask. I guess that’s a British-ism. I learn so much from this comic.)
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Rotas But Were Too Shy to Ask
What would you call it, a schedule?
A Bing search in the US for “rota chart” brings up pictures of things that have “Weekly Chore Chart” on the header instead of “rota”, but otherwise look like what is depicted in the comic.
So, Dean needs a therapist?
Eh, who here wouldn’t ultimately appreciate a ‘cast iron ear for some truly microscopic concerns’? I dunno, been reading the Tackleverse since the Dumbrella days, but I’m seeing a bit of my spectrum-addled self in ‘The Nuisance’ and (especially) DT, and feeling bit seen. I’ll note that I’ve never read GD so maybe DT is history’s greatest monster but all I’ve seen so far is someone who struggles regularly, having an off day.
on second thought, nevermind all that. One of those nights
